New to the code game and would need a little help understanding what would be the minimum size a closet could be that you can put a light in?

This would be a design issue and the NEC would not be involved.

Are you asking what the minimum size a closet needs to be in order to get a fixture in there legally?????

Making some assumptions to answer your question..... Assuming you intend to mount an undercabinet style light directly above the door header in the closet (Fixture width of about 1-1/2") with a 12" shelf in the back of the closet. You need 6" clearance from the face of the fixture to the front edge of the shelf, this means the minimum depth of the closet would nedd to be 19-1/2". There is NEVER an instance where the NEC "requires" a light in a closet. (Okay, since I used the word NEVER, let's see who can come up with the exception to my statement. lol)

An electric closet with a panelboard would likely require a light. Your statement would have been correct if you said a clothes closet.
