Hi all, got a question here, Im doing a fire job and ran across some old cloth wiring with no ground that got burnt in the fire , so inorder to get power to the rest of the circiut( that is also the old cloth wire with no ground), Im being told( By the AHJ) that the whole circiut will have to be reran [per code.I need to know where that is in the code that states this

While we are at it what was this cable designated as, trade name, NM is what is primarily utilized in residential today, was this cable also referred to as NM? Around here I always heard it called RAG WIRE.

If it's been damaged by fire, you won't find a Code reference requiring it to be replaced. It's just common sense.

Aside from it being common sense, I can't remember if it's in the NEC or in some local building codes but depending on the amount of work being done you may be required to bring the majority of the "system" up to code.

You will not find it in the Code but local codes may apply. The old NM cable is still good to go if it is not in the attic (it had the equivalent of TW wire in the cable), or has been exposed to overloading or the fire. There is no problem with cutting out the damaged portion and using the remaining portion of the circuit.

I know it would be commn sense to replace it ,in fact that it my intention. This wire is the old nm romex wrapped in like cloth ( rag wire if you perfer).Im just asking for some help in finding the code location as" not being able to refeed it nm-b".The ahj told me to look it up. So any help would be appreciated.

It's not in the NEC, in as many words. Ask the AHJ what local ordinance (code) he is refering to, so you can read it, and do a better job for him. . . . If he claims it's in the NEC, ask for the section number.

I just read your post, NMBME. Tell him there is no "fire damage" section. And ask him what section he is citing.

Having done many fire jobs i will say you best have a visit with the ahj before even bidding the job.One thing he might be after is what water damage was done to this wire.Wires in attic likely were very well heated for an hour and some damage was done even if you cant see it.
How bad was the fire ?Was it limited to just one room ?
