I have a builder that puts track lighting in his master closets and I'm getting different responses on meeting the code. Here is what I have.

NEC Definitions of a Luminaire
A complete lighting unit consisting of a lamp or lamps together with the parts designed to distribute the light, to position and protect the lamps and ballast (where applicable), and to connect the lamps to the power supply.

410.8 Luminaires in Clothes Closets

(B) Luminaire Types Permitted
(1) luminaire with completely enclosed lamp

(D) Location
(1) 12 in surface-mounted incandescent luminaire

NOTE: NEC 2008 (C) (1) 300 mm (12) for surface-mounted incandescent or LED luminaires with a completely enclosed light source installed on the wall above the door or on the ceiling.(More in-depth description)

410.100
Lighting Track A manufactured assembly designed to support and energize (lighting fixtures) that are capable of being readily repositioned on the track. Its length can be altered by the addition or subtraction of sections of track.

410.101(C) Loction Not Permitted.Lighting track shall not be installed in the following loctions:
(1) Where likely to be subjected to physical damage
(2) In wet or damp locations
(3) Where subject to corrosive vapors
(4) In storage battery rooms
(5) In hazardous (classified) loctions
(6) Where concealed
(7) Where extended through walls or partitions
(8) Less than 1.5 m (5 ft) above the finished floor except where protected from physical damage or track operating at less than 30 volts rms open-circuit voltage
(9) Where prohibited by 410.4(D)

410.4(D) Bathtub and Shower Areas.

A low voltage track light with a MR16 lamp enclosed in a track head with a glass lens enclosing the lamp. Does this meet the code for clothes closet permitted fixture. I can't find anything in the NEC where it says this is not permitted.

Joe

Sure you can install the track.

You just can not install any luminaires on it.

MR16 lamp enclosed in a track head with a glass lens enclosing the lamp.

Is it really enclosed?

I see a lot of MR16 track heads that only have glass in front of the lamp but the rear of the lamp is out in the open.

I see no ssue with the track if the track heads are totally enclosed, however track lighting is a terrible design for a clothes closet.

Waiting for that.

Closets are in the eye of the beholder. A 15x15 room with clothes hanging around the perimeter and a vanity in the center may be a closet to some but others may call it a dressing room. I have been in rooms that I thought were closets, not my installation, but the inspector had ok'd the panel in it because of the room size. Why we have AHJs.

So what is this room called. The closets have no doors and one has no walls and are open to the bath. The only door are in the toilet area and they are the only walls that go to the ceiling. The area across from the screen porch has a small sink, coffee maker , undercabinet refrig. and a microwave--- I think they took the MV out as of this morning. No shelves just closet rods.

boy, mark got screwed on the closet space.

The left half of Marcia's closet is really bathroom area. It is vanity with sink etc. wrapping around the wall. The bottom left closet is a standard closet but Marcia has taken that one also.

So-- I told the designers I need enclosed cans over the closet areas even though they are in the bathroom... um maybe it is a kitchenette.

The NEC doesn't cover weird stuff like this--- you have to use so common sense. If it is used for clothing then it's a clothes closet-- may as well try and keep it legal.

Was there cooking equipment in there? That'd be awesome. Just sittin' in the tub watching a game and cooking hot pockets in the microwave.

If Mark is lucky, he will be able to keep at least one whole wall in his closet.
