I have a builder that puts track lighting in his master closets and I'm getting different responses on meeting the code. Here is what I have.
NEC Definitions of a Luminaire
A complete lighting unit consisting of a lamp or lamps together with the parts designed to distribute the light, to position and protect the lamps and ballast (where applicable), and to connect the lamps to the power supply.
410.8 Luminaires in Clothes Closets
(B) Luminaire Types Permitted
(1) luminaire with completely enclosed lamp
(D) Location
(1) 12 in surface-mounted incandescent luminaire
NOTE: NEC 2008 (C) (1) 300 mm (12) for surface-mounted incandescent or LED luminaires with a completely enclosed light source installed on the wall above the door or on the ceiling.(More in-depth description)
410.100
Lighting Track A manufactured assembly designed to support and energize (lighting fixtures) that are capable of being readily repositioned on the track. Its length can be altered by the addition or subtraction of sections of track.
410.101(C) Loction Not Permitted.Lighting track shall not be installed in the following loctions:
(1) Where likely to be subjected to physical damage
(2) In wet or damp locations
(3) Where subject to corrosive vapors
(4) In storage battery rooms
(5) In hazardous (classified) loctions
(6) Where concealed
(7) Where extended through walls or partitions
(8) Less than 1.5 m (5 ft) above the finished floor except where protected from physical damage or track operating at less than 30 volts rms open-circuit voltage
(9) Where prohibited by 410.4(D)
410.4(D) Bathtub and Shower Areas.
A low voltage track light with a MR16 lamp enclosed in a track head with a glass lens enclosing the lamp. Does this meet the code for clothes closet permitted fixture. I can't find anything in the NEC where it says this is not permitted.
