Cant get through to the city inspector so I will ask here. The building is 1500 sq. ft., wood frame, and will hold 127 people. Do I have to use MC cable and EMT or can I use romex? Thanks.

Re: Club wired with romex?

is this building a place of assembly, if it is,
look at 518.4, need more info if not.

Re: Club wired with romex?

1500 divided byt 127 = a little over 11 sq feet per person not allowing for bathrooms.Dang thats packing them in .What kind of club is this ?Being its 100 people i think your forced not only into mc or pipe but a lot of other things like emg lights ,fire exit signs

Re: Club wired with romex?

11 sq ft./ person that is what i would call 2nd class seating ;) as stated if a place of assembly then other wiring methods would be required

Re: Club wired with romex?

If it is wood framed, obviously it is not type I or II construction, so 334.10(A) would not be an issue. Aside from that, the places of assembly rules would prevail. I highly doubt that it is one hour construction, however.

Re: Club wired with romex?

It will be a dance club. It is in a poor part of town and looks like a house that doesn't have any walls inside, its just 1 big room. The owner said the city inspector came by and told him about all of the permits he will need to have pulled. I don't have a code book in front of me so I'm guessing this is considered a place of assembly and romex wont be exceptable. Just because its a wood frame building doesn't automatically mean I can use romex?

Re: Club wired with romex?

I thought most clubs consisted of 3 pieces of bread, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo?

Where does the romex come into play?

Having come to this website for 5 years now I allways thought of it as a place to go for professional advice. Unfortunately this is the type of reply that most people can expect to receive when they ask a question. Sorry if I cant find the humor in the above reply.

Re: Club wired with romex?

i think i answered in a very professional manner.More info is needed as far as the oyhers ,well thay are suffering from switched dining room outlet syndrom :D That takes awhile to get over after long sessions on the couch :D

Re: Club wired with romex?

I have been scared to even go into my dining room because my wife has her computer in there and has a lamp pluged into an outlet.Should i call the local AHJ and have her arrested ? Will i get fined over this violation ?

Re: Club wired with romex?

places of assembly do not automatically rule out NM cable. 518.4(B) allows NM in buildings not required to be of fire-rated construction. As Ryan pointed out, this building in question is not likely to be required to be of rated construction.
