To comment on the fewer electrical fires in Chicago concept, one must also consider that there are probably very few homeowners that can bend pipe properly to make it fit inside their walls, so they must call a qualified electrican.

When the HO goes to sell the home, it would be a glaring violation to even the standard untrained independent home inspector that "something just doesn't seem right here" and cause the violation to be repaired by a qualified electrician. I think qualified electricians prevent house fires more than the wiring method.

I wonder if the big box stores in chicago sell NM-B? I have always wondered that.

It is easier to find EMT, IMC, and RIGID pipe than to find NM-B or NM-C in Chicago area Home Depots, Lowe'ses, etc. But if you look it is there, and people must be purchasing it... for what? who knows? Maybe they use it for decorative fencing or some other such thing.

Iwire, I don't know if we adopt it, but our city is now requiring sprinklers in all new homes. We used to have a 5000 sq ft limit though some of the jurisdictions around us already had a 0 sq ft limit.

Now we just have to hope that the insurance companies pay all the water claims.

John,
Now we just have to hope that the insurance companies pay all the water claims.
Why would you say that? Water damage from sprinker systems is very rare, and if a fire does occur, in over 95% of the cases the fire is controlled or completely extinguished by the action of the fire sprinkler system. They are an excellent life safety device as they give the occupants time to get out after the smoke alarm has alerted them. With out the sprinklers, often the smoke alarm activation it too late to permit egress from the structure.

How about in a loss of power in winter situation. Aren't those pipes in the attic (hopefully under a fair amount of insulation)? If you can't keep the house warm, and you know your pipes may freeze, you can turn the water off. Does the potable water shutoff also turn off the sprinkler pipes? I thought they had to have a separate shutoff?

Mark,
The sprikler piping will be run in a normally heated area, and just like any other water pipe in the building will freeze if it gets too cold. NFPA 13R for residential sprinkler systems in section 6.7.1.1 requires the use of a single valve for both the sprinkler supply and the domestic supply. This is to make sure that the sprinker supply is not accidently shut off. With a seperate valve for the sprinker supply it could be shut off and no one would know until it is too late.
