coach light problem

Re: coach light problem

To be fair, I have had a few 5 minute inspections here or there. I have timed myself on several occasions now to determine what it really takes to do an effective and comprehensive inspection. A 10 minute rough is not unreasonable. You may need another 10 or so for finals. Pool finals / change of occupancy inspections are the quick ones.

I recently had a service/standby system inspection for a new home depot that took approximately an hour.

Re: coach light problem

Wow 5 min inspections are quite rare around here.Especially on a rough in.As a time frame in regards to type we average as follows.

Pvc 5 min if plans are in the box
Rough in NM 20 to 45 min. if plans are in the box
Final depends on home from 15 min. to 1 hr.

There are a couple of inspectors I can run through inspections with.Just need a legal tablet and a pencil. This is when we might have 10 to 20 inspections some have been rolled day after day.Minor corrections are noted and taken care of ,the insp. signs them off for me and brite and early the next day a service crew goes through with my list. But that is a trust we have between us.
There are a few I wouldn`t even ask to do that.I know a 3200 sq ft home will be a 45 min inspection on a rough with one in particular.
On a final same house i`d say almost the same time frame. He opens panels ,light fixtures and devices ,a/c disconnects. He will calculate a 3.8 kw wall oven every time he see one.It is a standard for the comunity and he has finaled 100`s of homes with them. But nooooooooo he has to waste both our time fully knowing a 2 pole 30 with a lock out is required (just one assinine instance of MANY)
To those that have inspectors that aren`t an#@@y retentive count your blessings. ;)

Re: coach light problem

Actually I favor real inspections. We always do a complete code complaint job. However, judging from some of the work I've seen, some of our competitors cut every corner possible and still get away with it because of inadequate inspections. It seems unfair that when bidding on a job that the playing field is not level. These guys know that the inspection is a mere formality and can bid the job according to their sloppy, violation filled workmanship.

Allen,

I'm curious, what do you mean by "plans are in the box"? Most of our residential jobs don't even have electrical plans. Maybe just a print showing smoke detectors for the fire inspector to look at.

Re: coach light problem

The inspectors require a certified set of permit plans stamped from the county or they will slap a $30.00 red tag on the job.Granted the C.M. pays the tag but the insp. gets p _ _ ed off.
Don`t get me wrong about complete inspections I have no problem with them and yes you are correct that there are allot of shoddy EC`s out there that will try to cut corners everyway they can.But by the same token I know you have EC`s that you deal with on a daily basis that you know before you even get there that the job is going to A # 1.I have been in this area for 22 years and 99.9 % of the inspectors know me and the work i did when in the field and what I will have done under my jurisdiction in the area`s I manage.
Maybe on a final a gfci sticker might get removed before final or something like that i get a call from the inspectors.Hey allen at such and such lot/block you need a gfci sticker by the a/c.They sign it off its noted and stickered.
Not this one guy a $30.00 red tag and written is NOT READY 100 % reinspect / Recall. So for a silly sticker he created a complete reinspect for another insp or himself..The inspectors here are overwhelmed as it is within 40 sq miles in this county there are 20 maybe 30 huge sub divisions coming out the ground and they can`t keep up with what they have.
Now for a valid reason tag the job and require a 100 % reinspect if one likes or tag it and write a correction notice. For a valid reason I will eat crow. But for a floor receptacle that is 18 1/8 in from the edge of the railing In a loft that will never even be used because it is in the middle of the walkway what inspector here would tag a final for 1/8 of an in? Or the hvac installer forgot to put the manufacturers sticker of 30 amp for a 5 kw ahu that he has inspected in this one model time after time after time.$30.00 and another delay and reinspect
The list goes on and on.Is what he sites valid YES does it make scense No.Does it delay a closing Yes does he care No.He goes as far as seeing one of our service trucks in front of a home.Knocks on the door like the gestapo and demands to know what the electrician is doing.Heaven forbid the service tech is doing an extra or replacing a defective item.He will slap a stop work order sticker on the front door of this poor homeowners $400,000.00 home and we have to pull a permit for something that is stupid.

I can understand that. But I have revelations for you. :)

Recently, I returned to one of my roughs to trim it. Upon close inspection (as in, when I went to hang the light) I discovered that the masons took down my grommeted boxes and replaced them with "pre-boxed rocks" that appear factory/quarry made.

They look great, I didn't mind that at all. But the bad news was that they didn't take the ground screws that I left in my boxes out and install them into their boxes. Then they filled all the holes with mortar. And the grommets went AWOL too.

I have to say (as I pecked the mortar out from behind the box to get my grommet in, clipped the mesh back that was poking the NM, and carefully pecked out the ground screw's hole), I wonder how many 'installers' would just hang the light and walk away from a box that would sever the NM, and energize an ungrounded box. :D

You're so getting a pocket protector for Christmas. :p

Re: coach light problem

I have come to the conclusion that inspectors in Florida are retarded. Ok, not all but the ones mentioned in this forum. Of course this is a state that can't even figure out how to vote.

Allen,

I'm just curious, what on a new installation would require GFCI stickers?

Re: coach light problem

They all state the same thing manufacturers instructions.I am not advocating the stupidity of some calls just reciting from knowledge.
As posted by others some inspectors here are retarded :D That might be an understatment, but as I have said before there are some great guys to work with then there are I am we all have encountered that one frustrated lil fat guy that has a bone to pick with everyone he can.
AHJ having authority comes to mind also.
SAD BUT TRUE
