Has anybody had any issues with receptacles on islands or peninsular countertop spaces dealing with homeowners that are adamant about not having them?

NEC requires one no matter what HO wants.

I tell them they won't pass inspection without one. No final, no CofO. No CofO, they can't move in.
I am willing to work with them to make it as unobtrusive as possible, but they are required to have one.
I have the same things brought up about smokes.

I wired a residential kitchen remodel a couple of years ago where there was an island with 1' overhangs all the way around.

No receptacles were installed, and it passed.

Does this mean the installation was compliant?

I've done many, many, kitchens. Most people understand the need for the receptacle and the code requirements.

But....

Some people don't want the receptacle and I can't say I blame them. My approach is pretty much do whatever they want. If that includes NOT installng the receptacle then so be it. I let them deal with the inspector.

Rip away......

Whats to rip, your a big boy, if code compliance does not matter to you that is your choice. Hopefully at some point this comes back to bite you hard in the rear side.

As suggested in another thread, maybe you have lots of $$$$$$$$$$, and you can do what you want.

I can't rip into Scott that heavy. I guess it's a fine line but to INSTALL something not according to NEC is basically unpardonable, but, if the homeowner is paying the contractor and insists that the contractor (or tile man) not cut into his multi-thousand dollar counter top, etc; I think the best route is to advise the HO of the requirement and advise the inspector of the problem.

One thing you may find with me is that I tell the truth. I know there are guys here that take the same approach as me but would never admit it in public.

Can you (anyone) honestly say that if you are standing there with the customer in front of their fancy schmancy new island debating installation of a receptacle, that you will cut that hole no matter how adamant they are about you not doing it?

I HIGHLY doubt it.

You wanna see the scars big guy

I would hope as a contractor, that you would tell the homeowner they have no choice the receptacle is required, so they can plan in advance with the kitchen designer, and not have a problem at the final with a countertop overhang
