I am replacing a surface mounted sub panel in my garage, and I had some questions pertaining to brining NM into the cabinet. I would like to use ¾ pvc conduit to bring NM cable from the cabinet into the attic. From there, the NM is secured to the joists in the attic. The issue I run into is, I want to run the conduit through the structural ceiling. Unfortunately 312.5 C says:
(2) The raceway extends directly above the enclosure and does not
penetrate a structural ceiling.
(3) A fitting is provided on each end of the raceway to protect the
cable(s) from abrasion and the fittings remain accessible after
installation.
How can I get around this? It seems quite silly to transition to NM before heading into the attic.
Additionally, am I required to provide some sort of strain relief inside the attic when the cable comes out of the PVC. Or is it acceptable to use an end bell and secure the NM within 12” of the end bell?
One last question. The cabinet is located in the corner with some of the NM coming in from the side. This leaves NM exposed for roughly an inch before entering the cable clamp. I have heard that NM below 8 feet needs to be protected. Is this true? If it is, I would like to use a two inch pieces of ¾” PVC that has an end bell inside of the wall. However, I don’t know if that would be allowed if the end bell doesn’t provide any strain relief. Is stapling to the framing within 12” of the end bell adequate strain relief?
