Code ?- Sub Panel with NM

I have never run into this situation as of yet. I need to run a sub feed to an old fuse panel so I can upgrade to breaker panel board. No problem in theory. 60 amp sub panel for lighting and receptacles. I would like to know if it would be acceptable to run a 50 foot length of #6/3 NM with Ground to a sub panel over finished basement ceiling to first floor? This is how the original one was wired back in the day, however the system is not grounded and I really want to replace the old fraid cable since they are switching the fuse panel to a modern breaker panel. I am concerned about not securing the cable over the ceiling though. I do not know if this would be a violation in this situation on both levels, length and securing. I would much rather run conduit and THHN, but that would mean more damage to the finished basement ceiling.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Code ?- Sub Panel with NM

If you mean you will fish the cable in through an existing ceiling it is allowed.

Read NEC 2005 334.30. But I have to ask are you a licensed and insured electrical contractor?

I was wondering that too, but it is up to the moderators to decide.

I am a technician/journeyman in the IBEW but I do primarily Low Voltage applications on Industrial level and Residential Electric. I was asking this as a theoretical question. I want to make sure I run the cable within code. There is a master electrician on the premises. But I like to do my research. I have met many electricians that have proper certifications that do not do things the way they should.

I'm confused are you feeding a fuse panel with a 6/3-w/ground?
How are you going to land the neutral and keep it isolated from the grounding? You could install a bare minium breaker panel in place of this fuse panel but I don't see away around isolating the neutral.
As far as the the way you propose to run the cable, there is no requirment to secure it when fished between points as was mention about 334.30(B)

Re: Code ?- Sub Panel with NM

Im sorry, I have been working alot lately and probably didnt make my statement very clear. This is a removal of the Old 16 Circuit Fuse Panel and replacement with new 20 Circuit Panel Board. I am just concerned about staying within code for the cable run. Since this is not a typical situation for me. Normally when we have run the subpanels, they are very easy to route cable to, this one has a finished basement ceiling. My concern was that running the sub feed may be out of code as far as securing goes. Either way it looks like there are going to be some holes made to access the second floor.
