Is it a code violation to install a twistlock receptacle mounted to the dropped ceiling and from ther have a drop cord with a twist lock plug into the receptacle and a quad box on the end. The client was proposing this for frequent interchange of equipment. Is the drop cord configuration acceptable?

Thanks

Re: Code violation

Our responsibility stops at the TL recept. Anything beyond that is not considered part of the building wiring system.

Re: Code violation

if the client is proposing to use a drop cord as I described and its a violation of the NEC, OSHA or UL then I believe I have a responsibility to infor them of that.

Did they hire you as their codes and safety consultant? or as their electrician? Do what you were hired to do, do your work to code, collect your money, and move on.

You need to be careful where you tread with regard to informing clients. For instance, if you "discover" lead or asbestos and inform them, that puts them in a legal pickle. If they don't know about it, then they are in an entire different situation. Sometimes you can be too "helpful". Your customer wants a TL rec in the ceiling. You can do that. That's all you need to worry with.

Re: Code violation

If it will be used as a temp like a convience recep then its ok, but its sounds like someone will power equipment with it for some time. Then its not ok.

Re: Code violation

Wouldn't this be the same as the twist lock cords hanging out of the cielings in food processing areas like meat cutting rooms etc in supermarkets? They are used for "portable equipment" that theoretically could be moved for cleaning purposes. (Although I never saw anyone move a 900 lb automatic wrapping station, they are all connected this way)
