I will be getting a final this week and during my temp for test walk through my inspector mentioned that the air-handlers will need to be marked with the maximum overcurrent protection. I don't see this as a NEC requirement. I also talked to the mechanical inspector and he stated he knows of no mechanical code that would require this. Any ideas?

424.28 Nameplate.

(A) Marking Required. Each unit of fixed electric space-heating equipment shall be provided with a nameplate giving the identifying name and the normal rating in volts and watts or in volts and amperes.

Electric space-heating equipment intended for use on alternating current only or direct current only shall be marked to so indicate. The marking of equipment consisting of motors over hp and other loads shall specify the rating of the motor in volts, amperes, and frequency, and the heating load in volts and watts or in volts and amperes.

(B) Location. This nameplate shall be located so as to be visible or easily accessible after installation.

424.29 Marking of Heating Elements.
All heating elements that are replaceable in the field and are part of an electric heater shall be legibly marked with the ratings in volts and watts or in volts and amperes.
 
Maybe he is confused by 422.62(B)(1).

Maybe he is not confused. Looks to me like that would apply to an air-handler.


Appliance. Utilization equipment, generally other than industrial, that is normally built in standardized sizes or types and is installed or connected as a unit to perform one or more functions such as clothes washing, air conditioning, food mixing, deep frying, and so forth.

Article 422 covers electrical appliances that may be used in a dwelling unit or in commercial and industrial locations. It also covers appliances that may be fastened in place or cord-and-plug-connected, such as air-conditioning units, dishwashers, heating appliances, water heaters, and infrared heating lamps. Do the air handlers not have a data plate on them ether on the out side or on the inside of the service cover?

so why not install what is required by the nameplate?

The name plate only reflects the blower motor. A heat strip kit was added. I did a calculation but Bob pointed out this gives me minimum OCP and Dennis points out the 5KW is probably the heat strip with the motor.

Let me throw this in. How is it your problem? It should fall on the HVAC guys to apply the sticker and correctly mark the size heat strip they installed. They should go back to there mfg. data sheets to supply the min. and max. OCP for what is installed.

I don't think it is. The same engineering firm that spec'ed the units spec'ed the breakers installed in my gear. This inspector is a knowledgeable guy and I'm just preparing for battle. To have a final on a project of this size held up for this is not an option.
