your not supposed to make junctions in ansul boxes, I always nipple a 4x4 j-box next to it and pull the leads from the micro-switch into it to make a junction.

Good point. Did you notice where the splices are in that pic? Way back and hard to get at. Would not have been my first choice.

What's the real reason?

then my guess would be 208 single phase or 240 single phase. But why did they break the ground?

They didn't. See thread title. ;)

Three Phase. 120/208

That Ground definitely read 120v

....at least you're not color blind. :D

Utility uses Black Red Green here for 208/120 and 480/277

I work w/ one that uses black, red, blue for 208/120, and 480/277 is purple, yellow, black. 120/240/208 is black, blue, orange. and they require 120/240 to be blue/red; no solid black allowed.

Cows are colorblind too.......... I am awaiting the answer with breathless anticipation.

cows have a "muted" color pallette; i think its blue they don't see very well. this is according to the mythbusters that was on last night testing the 'red cape pisses off the bull' myth.

Tell that to all the bullfighters who have been gored???? Let me know how you make out with that huh????

I was able to eventually figure out the voltage.

Mabey you can figure out why.

Looking at the photos, if it were 277/480 shouldn't there be a barrier between the two switches?

Not that I'd want to rely on somebody following code to tell me the voltage any more than I'd want to jam my figures on the terminals 1942-handbook style.....

The switches are unrelated to the first pic. Sorry about the confusion.

Color?

We don't need no stinking color codes.

to Paul Coxwell,

I think the NEC specs 300 Volts difference as the requirement for a divider.
Is there a 300 Volt difference between 480 and 277 ?

All I know is every time I meet a new ansul installer, they ask me if I know not to run power into the box and make junctions, and I always tell them that I will nipple a j-box nex to it and pull the micro switch leads into it. other companies have had the junction box already there with the leads pulled into it for me. I dont know if there is an electrical code that prohibits it, but the ansul guys sure dont want it in there...

what is that?

They are feeders from a temporary generator.

I did not go out on this job but I know that is a 2 Megawatt genset and it's being run at 480. It's supplying some sort of pumping station.

do you think those colors mean anything to anyone?

At least some of them do. ;)

When we do these jobs we get big bins of cables from the rental company. The cam locs on the cable will be colored but it will be a random mix of colors. Previous users will have tapped on the colors they wanted. Now we get them and we will mark them our colors.

That was my point, don't trust the colors to be correct.

When we do these jobs we work one phase at a time to keep it easy and it goes without saying the cables checked for cross connections before being energized.
