We have been asked to hang ceiling fans over exercise equipment in a sports center. The have a dropped ceiling tiles with red iron about 8-10ft above. It has been a while since I did this type work on even a semi-regular basis at best, so I am not sure where to or what to look for as far as supports. I'm sure the local supply houses have whatever I need, but I want some sort of idea what I am looking for ahead of time. Thanks.

There's good info provided on this thread already. I would also ask the question about the minimum ceiling height needed from finished floor to install this fixture. Wouldn't want Dad lifting his child up and into the blades spinning. I remember a Health Department inspector one time wanting the blades no lower than (I think) 8 feet. Just a trhought. :)

Pretty much what I was looking for...I love how they do not show how the chain is attatched, though.
Yeah, you might need to put up a piece of strut between the bar joists, if there's nothing to put your chain around directly plumb in line with the box.

Somebody else makes a similar fan box for suspended ceilings that uses 4 chains that go out on angles. That setup is a royal pain in the arse.
