In the kitchen yes, in the cafeteria, no.

Its all one big room, there are vending machines, one long counter etc

I guess that means the fridge as well, always not sure about a fridge or freezer on a gfci circuit.

Don't forget all GFI's need to be readily accessible, so you can't use a device behind the vending machine. Isn't most of what you touch on the machine plastic?
