Alright guys I know this place is full of some guru's from many of the post I have already read. I am needing some help sizing and service up grade for the shop that I manage. To start I am not an electrician, but I have been in the industry for my entire career. I was a millwright in a wire manufacturing plant for 8 years and then moved to research and development where I did electrical and mechanical testing on electrical wire of all types. So moving forward the shop is a 80'x100' metal working shop with various equipment such as drill presses, 11 punch presses, air compressor, saws and so forth. Currently we have two, 200 amp, 240 three phase services(delta) and plan to eliminate one of the services due to being charged for the extra service every month just for having it. (Will save about $1,100 to $1,400 a year) Then we will upgrade the single service to a 600 amp 480/277 service to reduce our current draw on the shop as well as make way for two new pieces of equipment better suited for 480v and to have room for future expansion. I have a couple electricians that I will be contacting about the work but would like to have my home work done before proceeding. My thoughts are installing a 600 amp panel which will feed another 225 amp panel on other side of shop. In addition a step down transformer 480v to 240v/120v will be installed for a panel for the lighting/receptacles and a couple small pieces of equipment and single phase welders. We are also planning to upgrade the lighting to all LED high bay fixtures so the lighting load will be very small. My question is how does one go about sizing a shop like this? Because the full amp demand is quite high but you would be lucky to run 1/3 of the equipment at one time. I am attaching a sheet showing the equipment that is in the shop with the addition to the two new pieces of equipment we are getting with the rated amps all from the motors. The new equipment is a fiber laser and a new CNC press brake that is putting all this into motion. I am sure you guys that do this everyday this is a piece of cake but I would like to see how its done to broaden my knowledge a little more. Thanks in advance!
