I can tell you in jersey the going rate was $90 per man hour.I'm trying to get $75and getting rejected .Hanging out at the office affects the going rate.

What New Jersey are you in, the EC in the New Jersey I am in are all over the rate structure and the guys that are adding help and keeping busy are at the higher end of the rate, they are the ones that made it thru the past 3 years, it seems the charged enough to keep their business going

solid price VS going rate

solid price VS going rate

Stop scaring the customers, try giving them a price not a rate

i see your point...but i think it could really really be a coin flip as to which pricing method would do more to scare a customer...the cut and dry stuff (which is 75 % of our work) is pre priced...for the other 25 % i have tried to get away from a solid price and get my going rate...it seems most if not all of these "side projects" contain too many unknows and variables and far too much risk for a set price....i have also found that a person in authority, who would normally approve a small job (at my going rate) over the phone, once he has a bid in hand starts looking to get a second bid or at least starts asking other people at his firm what they think or if there is another way to do this...

and as to the guy getting rejected at $ 75 per hour when anyone was able to get $ 90 in the past...i think that has more to do with the economy than his pricing method

It's a solid price or your rate, there is no going rate, we sell a service that requires a qualified experienced person, we are not selling fast food, in our contractors association, I bet we don't have two contractors out of the whole group that have the same rate, we have plenty of guys with $150 and over rates, but they don't charge by the hour they charge by the job and if there are a lot of conditions that have unknows, they step price to avoid loosing money and keeping the customer in suspense, if you price residential jobs with an hourly rate you will usually end up with problems, and no matter what the rate they will develop feelings of the value
