Can you use SER cable in a commercial building from the disconnect to feed a 200 amp panel? This is for an addition, it would be a nightmare to run conduit through the existing structure.

Actually you could if all circuit conductors are insulated [neutral too] and you install it as per 334.

But I dont see the advantage. Can you desrcibe the "nightmare" and the type of construction.

Type MC cable is available in sizes that would fit the application. Check out Southwire's web site. I have used sizes to 350 MCM Al. They also can supply the proper conncetors for the cable.

I would say yes, especially if NM is allowable in the structure.

The title "commercial building" is something of a misnomer. You really need to speak in terms of class of contruction, which is often unknown in the case of an existing building. This is where the confusion begins. You can often look about and see how the existing systems are installed, but that's no guarantee. I wish that there was a simple way to have the class of construction determined for a fact at a glance.
