I have plans that show 208V 1ph hand dryer. Would lockable breaker be acceptable as disconnecting means for the dryer or one would have to provide local disconnect switch within sight of the dryer? We are under NEC 2017.

I have an engineer who says they are connecting hand dryers that are rated at 208V 1ph which will require a disconnect switch within 10ft.

I dont see any requirement for that in NEC 2017. Where is that requirement?

Ask the engineer. We can't read their mind. They might not approve of lockable breakers because it upset them when they were a little kid. I dunno. lol

2017 NEC 422.31 (C) Motor-Operated Appliances Rated over 1⁄8 Horse-
power. The disconnecting means shall comply with 430.109 and
430.110. For permanently connected motor-operated appliances
with motors rated over 1⁄8 hp, the disconnecting means shall be
within sight from the appliance or be capable of being locked in
the open position in compliance with 110.25.
(note there is an exception)

As long as there is a permanent lock out device on the breaker it's code compliant. Otherwise mount a toggle switch next it.

I think thats if the motor is 1/8 HP or less though right ? If its a 1/3 HP hand dryer and has no unit switch meeting the 422.31(C) exception it would need to meet (1), (2), or (3) in 430.109( C) Stationary Motors of 2 Horsepower or Less?

Those options in 430.109(C) are in addition ("shall be permitted") to the options in 430.109(A), which include a molded case circuit breaker. So a permanent breaker lock device on the branch circuit breaker complies with 430.109.

Now 430.102(B) would appear to require that the motor disconnecting means shall be located within sight of the motor. However, this is not a bare motor but a motor operated appliance. So Article 422 controls. 422.3 says that the requirements of Article 430 shall apply excepted as amended by Article 422. And 422.31(C), quoted above, states that as an alternative to the disconnecting means being located within sight of the appliance, it may be simply be "capable of being locked in the open position in compliance with 110.25."

So 422.31(C) allows a permanent breaker device on the branch circuit breaker, and in so doing, amends 430.102(B) for motor operated appliances.
