OK....I give up. Where can I find the definition of a " compact conductor ". Where and when are they used?

Re: Compact Conductors

Try searching for Stabiloy products from Alcan.

Compact conductors are made of non-round internal strands. The special shape allows them to fit closer together than round strands.

Re: Compact Conductors

Here's a link that should answer your questions. Go about half way down and there's a not so good drawing of a compact conductor. It's good enough that you'll get it though.

I just did a search for compact conductor and that was the first site I clicked.

Re: Compact Conductors

Thanks Guys......I've never seen them used in the field. I'm sure they are more expensive.

It you have used aluminum conductors you have probably worked with compact conductors without noticing it.

Re: Compact Conductors

Check out table C1(A) in Chapter 9. Look at the bottom of the table, here is what you will find:

"Definition: Compact stranding is the result of a manufacturing process where the standard conductor is compressed to the extent that the interstices (voids between strand wires) are virtually eliminated."

Re: Compact Conductors

The most common compact strand condcutors are aluminum, but it is also available in copper. This was an invention of the aluminum people to permit aluminum conductors to be installed in the same size raceway as the equivalent ampacity copper conductors.

Look more closely the next time you use some 4-0 SE cable. The clue is the flattened outer curface of the outermost strands.
