Compact Conductors

I thought I may ask this question since this panel of engineers havent disappointed me this far.

Can anyone tell me what a compact conductor is?
That may sound stupid and I may even know the answer already put I wish to not be confused anymore about this. The Tables of Chapter 9 in the NEC has compact conductors in them.

So who can help me out? :confused:

Its a stranded conductor that goes through a manufacturing process which reduces it total diameter and area.

Compact conductors are AL conductors that have been squeezed in size so that a #4 is about the same size as a #4 copper conductor for example.

To expand on what Bryan said the individual strands are not round which allow air gaps or space between the strands. They look more like a octagonal shape. The conductors can be either AL or CU

No. #4 is the same physical size in both. What they have done is to change the shape of the strands to eliminate the small spaces that exist when round strands are used. In many cases the result is that you can get the same circuit ampacity in the same size raceway using compact strand aluminum conductors as you get when using standard copper conductors.
