I don't like em one bit. They're supposed to save Mother earth but if they break you're supposed to evacuate the block and call for men in spacesuits to cleanup the four molecules of mercury vapor released, and then call 1-800-ISUEYOU so the firm of Dewey Cheatem and How can start a class action suit over the incident.

I prefer incandescent.

In all fairness there is a lot more mercury in a standard floursent lamp than in a CFL. The same clean up rules apply to both.

Hmm, and how many people really follow the rules with the regular flourescent tubes?

You wonder how many people actually KNOW that there is mercury in them AND that there are special problems with mercury? If it is such a problem how come there is no warning label on the carton or even directly on the tube?!

There are usually more than a couple in each hosehold in the kitchen and the garage.....

my question is if the government is really conserned about the enviroment..then why no deposit or return the old one before you get new..either or both would ensure recycling and would really cause no hassel at all for consumer..they adapted to the battery requirment..

Ive had the same spiral 23w ones now for about 2 years now in my kitchen H7's. And these came out of a commercial unit and they are definatly not the crappy ones. I even put one through the dishwasher a few times and it still works The only ones that never seem to go for more than a year is the smaller (60w equivillent ones). They either buzz very loudly or just blow out after 9 or so months. I even have some 23watt (100w equivelent)in my basement keyless for about 3 years now and they still work. I guess it all depends on which ones you buy. I personally dont have to much of a problem with CFLS unless its in a room that I really would like to dim like bath and bedrooms.

Once by accident and again for fun??? Are your dishes afraid of the dark? :-?

I've got a bunch of pendants with 12" globes, and I have Sylvania 27W twists installed base-up. At 18 hours a day lit, I'm getting about 3 years out of them. They smell a little 'electrical' for the first couple hours, but i figure that's all the glues and solvents and such getting baked. They do get rather warm in use, almost as hot to the touch as a 40W incandescent.

I have had Sylvania 13w twists in my office and bathroom lights. Only now, after about 2.5 years of use, did I lose 2 of the four in the bathrrom. No dramaitc failure mode, just dark tubes at the base end and they would go out and restart several times. I broke one open to see the electronics, no signs of overheating at all, in fact they are pretty complex, a surprise considering the cheap cost.
