Compression Lugs

Hi Guys,
Quick question here - can I use a larger cable size compression lug for installations where I'll be using a smaller diameter cable. For example, I need to terminate a #1 cable to 5/8" terminal stud, but the smallest 5/8" compression lug I'm able to find is rated for 350kcmil conductors. Is this a no-no or can this be done?

I'm not sure if the barrel can be compressed "tight" enough to make an acceptable termination.

Thank you,
EE

The lug should match the conductor size and type that it's connected to. I have seen guys stuff extra copper strands into a too large terminal before crimping. Will probably work forever with any issue but it's still not code complaint.

Some people simply drill a larger hole, if the tang will allow it.
I know that some lug manufacturers offer blank tangs for field drilling.

Some compression lugs are "range taking" where used with specific crimping tools. At one time you only needed to stock 4 SquareD lugs to be able to cover 6 AWG through 500 kcmil. Not sure if they still make that line or not.

A bit different than what you are talking about, but blackburn has a series of "common die" lugs that go #6 thru 350 with the same die. More specifics in this thread. Its a specific lug for each size however. Having a single lug that covers a range of sizes would indeed be handy.
