Concrete Ceiling

Wondering how to install a box up there for a dining room fixture. If I chop in a pancake will there be enough concrete to secure it with screws? Doesnt look too thick.

Unless I surface mount it? Do you guys have experience with concrete ceilings?

Is there conduit connected to that fitting? Might be able to put a box on the conduit if it's secure enough.
What is the weight of the fixture?

If you have the fixture, I would see if you could just surface mount a pancake box as long as the canopy will swallow the pancake box. OR use medallion of some sort to make up some thickness. Or just skip the box, is it really going to accomplish anything?

That really doesn't look like poured concrete. It looks more like cinder blocks but we know that can't be the case. LOL

You can actually surface mount a pancake box which will be more shallow than the wiremold box. There also looks like there is plenty of concrete to cut in a pancake box. If the fixture will allow the 1/2" then just surface mount it.

I considered that too. What is the weight limit of a pancake vs wiremold box secured with either toggle bolts or anchors. I guess toggle bolts would hold more.

I wouldn't use toggle bolts. These hold quite a bit. I assume a pancake box holds the same as a standard 4" round box. These anchors come in different grades and I believe they could hold a person.

Never found a Tapcon that I would trust holding any weight in a ceiling. They always seem to work their way loose. Now, depending on the concrete or masonry surface, if you don't drill too large of a hole, and the weight is not too much, they might work.

What are the screws there connected to now?
They look to be standard size.
Are they inserts or perhaps a box or ring of some type laid in for the original pour

I was back there today. Check out what was holding the fixture bracket. Was just a surface mount fixture before. Question is. Would you trust those inserts or drill new holes? I may use them with a round wire mold box.

I would trust them. What would you install as better?

If you're lucky, you can get two mounting holes and a KO of your box to all line up.

I might use them but use longer screws. Also, since you said your new fixture weighs about 30lbs, I might try to use a teather wire and secure it to the light and with a new hole and some type of anchor to the ceiling.
