So nice guy that I am, I am putting a generator in for my daughter's mom. It is a 12kW USED GENERAC. The breaker on the gennie is a 50 Amp. Looks to me for the 10 feet I need to run, #8 THHN is fine.

BUT, I thought I read that I need to use 115% of the gennie rating. This would mean I need to go to #6 THHN.

Am I misunderstanding things?

Please help as this IS a "freebie"... ( I know im too nice, at the price of wire and gas for the truck......)

The 115% is only for the conductors between the output of the generator and the first OCPD. Where the generator has a built in OCPD, you do not use the 115%.
445.15(A) General.
The ampacity of the conductors from the generator output terminals to the first distribution device(s) containing overcurrent protection shall not be less than 115 percent of the nameplate current rating of the generator. ...
