Here is my question, we ran out of 4/0 THHN, and were told to use 4/0 Superflex welding cable (600v) in its place. Is this legal? I can't seem to find anything that says no, but I also can not find Superflex under conductor type. My first thought is no, what do you think?

Re: Conductor Type

the welding cable may not be listed for use as power cable.
from the search i did, if the wire is also listed as rhw or rhh it may be ok.

there are several postings on welding cable.
goto search, look in all forums for"welders".
you will get a good list of related topics for your application.

Re: Conductor Type

Thanks for the response, I didn't find anything similar in a search. Maybe I need to clarify that this wire will run from a disconnect to a contactor in a control panel.

Re: Conductor Type

If it only says "welding cable" on the jacket...no
If it has a wire type ie rhw or rhh then yes, also try type W (I think that's right).
Some welding cable is only rated for DC power

Re: Conductor Type

Welding cable is "cable" and is covered in Article 400.

If it is type "W", it is not permitted to be installed in conduit that exceeds 24".

Re: Conductor Type

Dave,
How is welding cable covered in Article 400? If it is listed only as welding cable, then it is not permitted to be used for electrical power systems. Some welding cable is also listed as RHW and can be used for electrical power systems. The dual listed cable can be used just like any other Article 310 conductor.

Re: Conductor Type

Hi Don,

If the cable is of the type and marked "W";
Table 400.5(B) Note 1: The ampacities under subheading D shall be permitted for single-conductor Types SC, SCE, SCT, PPE, and W cable only where the individual conductors are not installed in raceways and are not in physical contact with each other except in lengths not to exceed 600 mm (24 in.) where passing through the wall of an enclosure.

400.8 Uses Not Permitted.
Unless specifically permitted in 400.7, flexible cords and cables shall not be used for the following:
(6) Where installed in raceways, except as otherwise permitted in this Code.

Re: Conductor Type

Dave,
Type "W" cable is not welding cable. Type "W" is flexible power cable. They are not the same product. There would be no problem using type "W" in the control panel. There would be a code violation using welding cable unless the welding cable is also listed as RHW or similar.
