Contractor wants to run conduit and wire associated with the elevator selector switch in a fire command center, in the shaft of the elevator. Is this permissible?

thanks,

Mike

Here in CA the state has control over the inspection of elevators so the NEC is not applied by us, though they still follow it as a guide line. They adopt the California Elevator Safety Code.

I didn't understand the question completely, just remember that the elevator shaft is one hour rated.

If the conduit and wire being installed is just for operation of the elevator this should be acceptable. Now if this conduit and wire starts wandering around to points beyond elevator control you'll have problems......... but you need to check with AHJ's involved. We added smoke detectors for elevator recall and wanted to extend the system to other parts of the building. NO way if that conduit had been installed in the elevator shaft. It would have been less expensive to run inside the shaft but we ended up putting a riser up adjacent but outside the shaft. This met everyone's concerns.

I'm with cleveland on this...contact the AHJ. This is probably much bigger than the NEC for where you're at. All kinds of potential for down$ide in a shaft( firemarshall, etc). Due diligence leads charge in the neighborhood.
