I have a brand new install and thought there would be a code requirement to cap unused conduit and provide a pull string. I'm not finding it in the code. If I had found it, my job would be easy, so I'm trying here to see if there is a section I'm missing. I'm sure the topic will degenerate into what is best (obviously I know it is best), but if we can keep it on point that would be ideal. I wanted to know if there was a code section on point that required:

  • Newly installed conduits to be capped?
  • Newly installed conduits to have pull strings?
  • Newly installed conduits to have labeling?

None of the above, those items are more of a specification.

There are some requirements addressing abandoned cables in chapters 7 and 8.

I probably should have mentioned 300.7 for a point to ponder.

Welcome to The Forum.

There are no NEC code sections or requirements on the three points to which you inquired. Job spec is an entirely different animal, and may require such provisions.

To Rogers point, the ***.25 codes in chapter 7 and chapter 8 (725.25, 800.25, 820.25, etc.) require removing accessible portions of abandoned fire alarm and communication cables.

Or labeling them with a tag.

I'd say the conduits need to be capped or otherwise effectively close off openings into enclosures to comply with 110.12(A).

If duct tape is not acceptable method of closing a hole in a cabinet, neither should be duct tape on the far end of raceway entering same cabinet.

Pull strings or labeling of unused raceways are not required by NEC.

"Neat and workmanlike" is there for situations like this.
Can be very neat and very workman like and still not have pull strings, labels or caps, or can just as easily be very not neat or not workman like and still have caps, labels and pull strings.
