I am looking for some type of metal channel to run conduit inside. Maybe something like Unistrut or some type of cable tray. This is for a correctional facility. I need to run some conduit in the cells, and need something to secure the conduit to concrete walls, while covering any sharp edges.

Has anyone used anything like this before? Can you give me a manufacturer or part number?

Thanks in advance:
Steve

Is there some reason you can't use straps? Never worked in a jail but have viewed the backside of the bars.lol

Hmmmm....interesting request.

From what I've seen on TV, it seems to me that prisoners can take just about anything, no matter how benign, and turn it into a weapon. I can only imagine what could be made with a raceway system.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Plus, I'm afraid straps sticking out will give one guy something to bang another guy's head against.

The architect was talking about some type of channel that would mount on the wall. Then the conduit goes in the channel, and a cover rivets onto the channel. I would ask him, but I am supposed to be the electrical engineer, and I hate to admit I don't know what he is talking about.

unistrut used to make a lighting channel that was an approved raceway with a cover that snapped into place I see no reason it could not be riveted also I have also use ridgid conduit with two hole straps and tamper proof fasteners

HVAC guys either buy or fabricate galvanized steel covers for their refrigerant lines when they have to run them from a condensor up a wall. I have seen them in many sizes, but I don't know if they purchase these or make them in their sheet metal shop. They are shaped like a rectangle, with the back side missing, and they have a continuos flange on both sides. You could shoot that into concrete, or use tamperproof fasteners.

A call to an HVAC distributor should provide you with more info!

steve66,

I don't know what size conduit that's needed, but maybe you could suggest ,for example, running a 4x4 wireway and rivet the cover on,or run the conduit inside the wireway.

It's bad enough that architects and engineers hate to admit that they sometimes don't know what they're talking about. Now you tell me that they also hate to admit that they sometimes don't know what the other is talking about.

When they're done not talking, some electrician is left holding the prints.

Thanks for all the replies.

Brian: No one is forcing you to bid on any job, and there are other lines of work. If you are presented with a set of plans that seem to be nonsense, either pass on the job, or call someone and express your concerns or make a suggestion.
