your exactly right about the engineer doing the calcs. and actually putting circuits in conduits but if you've been on power plant jobs sometimes people change the way things are routed and the conduits they are installed in so the fill gets all screwed up; you know whatever makes it easier and convenient for the conduit runners. i have also had some engineers screw things up good as well.

So the NEC allows us to pull NM cables and things like this in conduit?

For some reason I had it in my head that you weren't allowed to because of the bundling or heat dissipation of the conductors being in a jacket and then in a conduit. Someone told me that somewhere in my past.

As long as NM is not in a damp or wet area, (ie...outdoors,etc..), its code compliant.

I use multi-conductor cables on a regular basis and I pull them through conduit. The main reason is it is a government contract and they are overly cautious about everything.

Belden's web site has a good conduit fill calculator as well as West Penn.
