In Article 310.15 spacing is required to be maintained between conduits, tubing or raceways. It doesn't specify how much space. What is acceptable to the code?
Is there any requirement then for spacing for the purpose of heat dissipation. Is it only to ensure room for installation. Why would an inspector ask me to install a duct bank for service entrance conductors underground for spacing purposes?
There is a big difference in heat dissipation between conduits in open air and conduits in an underground duct bank. The only reason large underground duct banks don't normally have serious heat problems is the very conservative load calculations in Article 220. There have been duct bank failures where Table 310.16 ampacities have been used and where the conductors were actually loaded near their rated ampacity.
