conduit support

according to NEC is it not permissable to consider a conduit passing thru a framing member in a vertical run as a support? Am I reading it wrong? Does it only attain to horizontal runs?

Re: conduit support

I think if you first read 344.30(B) (for RMC) you might be able to say that it's not absolutely clear on your question. Then you would have to consider that it might be an AHJ call, and I don't think an AHJ would be on your side if you chose to not secure or support it.

Look at 344.30(B)(3). It sort of implies that if you have absolutely no choise you'll have an option.

Re: conduit support

heres the exact situation that occured..i have a piece of 1/2 emt coming out the top of a panel and straight thru a chase to the second floor. Theres about 16" from the top of the panel to the top wall plates, so the pipe passes thru that plate. Then theres a 14" tji then the bottom plate of the second floor wall, then an 8' wall, top plates, and 8" ceiling joists, the pipe then 90's and is fastened so from the point its fastened at the top to where its fastened in the top of the panel is about 11 1/2 feet, and the home runs were rejected because theres no "mechanical fastner's" at the 3 foot point away from the panel. I've never had a problem with this before..do I just have a pissy inspector?

Re: conduit support

do I just have a pissy inspector?
I don't think so. It sounds like you should secure it. Why do you expect your inspector to allow it to be unsecured for 11 1/2 feet?

And supporting doesn't count for securing within 3' of termination.

Re: conduit support

or 5 feet.. hehee

how come no one ever remembers that exception?

"where the building structure does not permit" can be interpereted alot of diferent ways...

Re: conduit support

i know i know... :)

but you never hear anyone say,

"Gee, Dave, how come you supported that box within 3 feet, when you could have supported it within 5 feet of that box on an unbroken length???

i mean, come on... ;)

Re: conduit support

You're not forgetting that 358.30(A) exept. 1 can only be used in the absence of a closer structural member to secure to are you? :)
