Conduit With Old Work Box

I have a job where I am installing an EVSE via a hardwired connection through conduit. There is an existing 2 phase 20 amp circuit that terminates in an old work box on a sheetrock wall. What is the recommended way to install something that EMT or LiquidTite could connect to in this situation? Is there a metal box cover made for this application, or is removing the old work box, patching the drywall and installing a new metal box proud of the wall the only way?

It depend on the box that is in the wall. In some cases you can pull the box out and connect the wire directly to a 4" sq. box.

You may be able to pull the box out and install a 4: square box and fasten it to the stud in the wall if there is one there. Then you can use a 4" sq ext. ring.

Btw, 240v 20 amp will be a slow charge. Maybe that is all you need.

Use them all the time. Great to feed surface run EMT off an existing single gang receptacle or switch box.

I have also used many of them during my career. Many electricians don't realize if you rotate it 90 degrees the other 4 holes are for attaching to a 2 gang box.

Never knew that. I've always pulled out 2 gangs and changed to normal 4 square.

No way, you are a genius. I frequently use the raco 187 but I never even noticed those holes . Must be something they just started doing in the last couple months

I'm now mad at myself for not just drilling those out if there aren't on every brands?

I googled it and pulled up pictures of the eaton/crouse hines, steel City, and Garvin versions, and they all appear to have those holes. Funny how they all started adding these holes at the same time a couple months ago...

Raco 187 is exactly what I need to extend the plastic box and get a knockout for conduit. Thanks all

Actually, they were just released today.

Even the fire version has them; but then, why wouldn't it?

Used them frequently but added a ground screw for bonding because they rarely set directly on the other box.
