confused about future

Alright fellas i got kind of an off beat question and i hope some of you take is seriously I just recently passed my NJ state licensing exam and my hope is to some day go into buisness for myself. The problem is that I am a quandry as how to efficently go about it. Is one just supposed to put an add in the phone book and wait for the phone to ring or what. Should i be looking to get into some sort of niche? I personally do not know of many builders. If I was considering getting into the service end should i be thinking of hiring another mechanic and helper right off the bat to meet a higher volume of buisness? Can anyone provide any insight to this from their past experiances?
 
Be honest with yourself about what you really want. Do you want to do service? New residential - commercial - industrial?? To choose a way to market yourself, you need to decide what discipline you want to persue. I'm sure at this point you'd do anything, but you can't do it all. Each discipline (so to speak) requires you to expose yourself to a different clientele.
 
i know what your saying eric, i feel like a student about to graduate undergrad and not sure what avenue to pursue. I guess i would like to go down the most profitable one ? but i do not want to feel limited to one which is why I am trying to learn more abour industrial wiring. am i over thinking this and should i stick to what i know best? which is residential new and old/service?

I see your in Jersey, the last 2 months I am getting calls from other EC's asking if we need an electricians, they are slow, unless your in established areas of work, or have maint contracts, your in a down market, we see it all the time someone gets a license, never checks to see if there is work a in the area. The residential work and some of the commercial, has slowed, it started when the housing marked went south.

If you can find something in the industrial area, if there is any industrial jobs left in jersey good luck.
 
As Satcom has said, given that your background is in residential now isn't the greatest time to start a residential electrical business. The housing market has tanked in the past year or so. I would start with placing an ad in the local paper and see if you can generate some business which will get your name out there through word of mouth. In the beginning you should be open to taking any type of job. As you become more established try to find a niche that suits your skills and profitability. Good Luck.
 
And your ad should read:

Boss wanted. Must have own tools and truck. Experience writing checks also required. Call now for the best opportunity you have ever seen.
