Hello,

Just a quick basic question... does the code allow you to join two wires of different sizes? I have a device that can accept max #8 wires and, but it's a long way from the panel and due to voltage drop considerations I need to run #4. Can I put a J-box right by the device and connect the #4 to the #8 and run #8 a few feet to the device?

Thanks

Yes, as long as the #8 wire is properly protected from overcurrent in accordance with Article 240.

I believe you have to upsize the EGC when you upsize the wires also.

not too positive of the exact distance off hand but it was over 1/4 mile .
It was a site lighting project at a prison I worked in. Ran a 6 way 4" concrete encased duct bank in a complete circle around the prison. Set about 12 manholes. The duct bank started at a manhole just outside of a building that we set the lighting contactor panel in and it ended in the same manhole. I poured 1300 yards of concrete on that project also.
