Hi I am working for Amor Electric

xxxxxxxxxxx

I have problem connecting Honeywell RTH230B thermostat. This thermostat very popular with the Do It Yourself crowd, judging by the many questions about how to connect this thermostat.

Honeywell, while making a very good product, seems to not want to post the wiring diagram at their web site, and does not even recognize their own part number.

I have emailed Honeywell several times on this, with no luck.

To help others troubleshoot and advice how to connect this thermostat, I really need to see the wiring schematic.

If anyone has had any luck finding this diagram at the Honweywell site, please post bcak with the link to it.

Thank you in advance!

i bought a honeywell thermostat once and could not get it to work. i called the tech support, she said "you need to hook up the orange wire to X". i told her i didn't have an orange wire. she told me to find one. that was the end of me buying honeywell thermostats. i did explain how the connections were made at the heat pump; the tech had no idea what i was telling her. all they know is what color goes where.

The orange wire is used to energize the reversing valve, so the two freon coils swap the order the freon travels through them. Freon emits heat when compressed, and absorbs heat when allowed to evaporate.

Normal mode is for cooling, so the heat is absorbed inside and given off outside. When the reversing valve is energized, heat is absorbed outside and given off inside. Only heat pumps use this extra wire.

To add to Larry's post......to hook the tstat up you also need to know if the reversing valve is energized during the cooling or heating mode. This depends on how your unit is configured.

Based on my experience, the "X" terminal is typically "common" on HW products.

my thermostat wire did not have orange. it was using a different color. when i tried explaining this to the tech, she could not understand what i was talking about when describing what terminal each wire was connected to. she only knew what colors her computer told her. i was just pointing out that tech support @ honeywell sucks.

Personally, if your an electrician, should you really need tech support for installing a t-stat? The only reason I even make this comment is the fact that so many electricians around my area are just wire pullers, and it's no wonder HVAC guys are impressed that it works the first try after i've wired it... but this comment is only for my area, not sure what other areas of the US are like...

well, if it doesn't work when i connect it i suppose i do. the package said it worked with 99.9% of all units, and mine was one of the 0.1% that is non-compatible. i had to 'hotwire' the ac and return the thermostat for a different model. i also have an EC license and own the company, so i consider myself to be more than a wire-puller, although i do pull quite a bit. :p

Yep... like I said, only in my area...
