There are also relays without contacts that he may run in to. Mecury relays, solid state relays and triac's. A triac is not really a relay, it's sometimes used for remote switching ( machine controls ).

Mercury relays are good to know about because of the high duty cycle. turn off and on all day without wearing out.

Solid state is good if you are in an environment where contacts would be effected.

Is a motor starter just a contactor with fuses or overloads? and can you explain to me the difference between the different size (1,2,3...)motor starters?

Yes, a motor starter is just a contactor. You can install numerous additional devices to it, such as fuses, overloads, auxillary relays etc. . The different sizes are to accomodate different horsepower and/or current ratings according to nema standards.
