Iam running some conduit for a motor at a remote location. Can I run 2 control wires in the same pipe? Conduit is 1.1/2" rigid with 3 1 ought wires and a #6 ground. I want to put 2 #14 's in for a auxilliary disconnect contact.
Thanks for any help

Re: Control wires in motor lead conduit?

Gary,
It is likely that the code will permit that installation. We would have to know more about the nature of the control circuit to be sure. However, if the run is very long and has a few 90s it is also very likely that the #14s would be damaged while the wire is being installed. There is just too much difference in size between the 1/0 and the 14s. I won't install #14 control wires in the same raceway if the power leads are larger than #4.

Re: Control wires in motor lead conduit?

I can't think of any reason the code would prohibit such an installation but as another poster pointed out you are better off using larger control conductors and/or larger pipe to reduce the possibility of damaging the small conductors.

Re: Control wires in motor lead conduit?

Thanks for the replies ....the control wires would be 110volt....motor leads 480volt.
I was also a little concerned with damaging the #14's

Re: Control wires in motor lead conduit?

If the control circuit is grounded to chassis or the starter enclosure it would be best to put this aux. contact or pilot switch on the hot side of the coil circuit.
