I think this is the correct thread.

Here is a link to a very old document, 9065PD9301, from Square D, that has some pretty good information on motor overload protection. Look at the bottom of page 20 for information on why we put the OL contacts where we do. Primarily it has to do with the probability and outcome of a short to ground in the control circuit.
