I don’t know what it is like in the US to alter an item of lifting equipment be it for personnel or goods.

I do know the UK system and the legal requirements. They can’t be that much different in principal. IE the responsibility for design and the equipments subsequent safe operation. Get it wrong and someone will be held responsible in court.

Assume on Ingenieur’s say so Aaron installs a back up UPS and it goes wrong. Ingenieur’s in the clear as he’s hidden on an internet forum, Aaron on the other hand finds himself on a charge of endangering life or worse the loss of life.

Who has it on their conscience for the rest of their lives?

I recommend a generator
the ups device I linked is certified for use
ANY change like this and the elevator has to be re-commissioned
Load test
all controls tested
all EPD's tested
buffers tested
safties tested
etc
observed and certified by a third party

to make the change he will need prior approval from the lahj
I am the lahj for my state

the elevator industry is highly regulated
in this case
he and his supplier (an elevator specialist) will review
the lahj will review
it will actually be performance tested
the third party inspector and lahj will witness and approve
plus testing every 6 months

Not nearly the same.

I cannot work on an elevator for people, my licensing does not cover that. I am also not trained or qualified to do so.

A material lift (not for people) is another mater, I can work on those but have enough sense not to redesign it.

So like me you wouldn’t put your neck in the noose?

I am qualified to work on passenger/goods lifts and cranes, I also know how far I can go without falling foul of the law.

BTW, I don’t know if anyone’s noticed, the OP has gone missing.
