0.85 and 0.85 (or 0.8 and 0.9) are pretty good approximations when no manufacturer data is known.
They are not approximations.
They are assumptions.

But, in this case we don't need such assumptions. The information supplied tells us the kVA requirement.
The converter needs to be able to supply that.

It would be kinda nice to know how hard this chiller compressor starts, and if this is only the load of a single compressor, or the aggregate load of the compressor plus a circulating pump.

That might change my assumptions on phase converter sizing.


Btw, to the original poster. Energy is like a bag of potato chips. Every time you transport it, or change it's form, or otherwise handle it, it becomes less goodly :) That is pretty much the definition of entropy.
