My neighbor just bought a new cooktop and asked for my help installing it. The new unit is a 4 wire ( 2 hots, neu., gnd ), while the feed is only 2 hots w/ gnd. I thought we should run a new ckt. to the panel, but he wants to tie the neu. and gnd. together. Am i correct and why? He's a bit hardheaded since he's read a couple of Home Improvement books. Thanks

Re: Cooktop wiring

For an existing branch circuit you can. check 250.140 of the NEC there are conditions. You should install a bonding jumper from the neutral to the frame. If it were My house I'd be safe and run a new circuit.

Re: Cooktop wiring

Remember, you are only allowed to use this grandfather provision if the neutral is #10 or larger. Is it?

Since it is no longer permitted in new installations, this means that you would be doing the homeowner a favor to run a four-wire circuit. But it is legal as an existing circuit.
