A friend of mine does alot of residential work and found a cool tool called pocket ladder. Hard for me to desribe but it clamps by pressure to 2X4 to give you a step up and doubles as wire reel see pocketladder.com
Also, I'm sure alot of you have recognized that lazer levels have come a long way--easier to use and less expensive. A lazer level enables you to visally route a path for conduit runs at a distance especially when you have several levels of obstruction and you seek the most direct path.
