Is flex cord allowed at all in cable tray? It has been installed previously by others for a manufacturing and printing application. They want us to do the same for a similiar new machine, I do not think it is allowed. Would any of the uses permitted allow it? I believe we need tray cable or other approved means. Thanks Scott

In addition to what Greg said, flexible cord can't be used as a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure. (See 400.8(1))

Its common to use cord as part of a machine. Thats allowed, so if the cable tray in question is also part of the machine, than it is likely acceptable.

Its just can't be part of the building wiring.

Flexible cable, only as found in article 400, may not be used in cable trays, see 392.3(A).

However, if the flexible cable is rated TC-ER then, under 336.10(7), it is allowed to be run to machines.
