Cord strain relief

Is it required now to have a mesh basket type strain relief for pendant cords.or can a regular stain relief be used for a short drop?

IDK about required but the mesh basket does seem to do a better job, long term.

Short is subjective.

I believe they're intended for sealing, not gripping.

They do prevent the cord from being pulled out of the box but yeah, mostly for sealing.

The Kelms metal basket type cord grip is the best but a little pricy. I have seen where they installed cord grips with the rubber sealing washer that caused a ripple in some cords. Never use garbage Type SJO cord on strain reliefs.

I like the mesh type grips. They hold onto the cords a LOT better. But they cost a lot more too. A regular plastic cord grip can be had for under $1, and they are pretty good as plastic cord grips go. But a mesh grip is going to be at least $25. They also take more time to put together so you end up with a plastic cord grip for $1 plus $5 of labor versus a $25 mesh grip and $10-20 for labor. It is really hard to justify that to management unless the money is in the job upfront.
