So say you got a bunch of bad breakers and you install them and a house burns down are you at fault?

Most likely not BUT I'll bet you'll be in court with your lawyer. If this should happen NOTIFY your insurance carrier ASAP, and even if they hire a lawyer for you, I would suggest you hire your own lawyer to CYA, the insurance company lawyer is looking out for their interest first and yours second. In many cases this is OK but there are some where it may not be acceptable.

And a check of the Schneider Electric / Square D web site mentions nothing about a recall. What is their position? Square D has a reputation for quality; how did this get by their controls? How was the fraud discovered and why was it not noticed sooner? And what's to prevent this from happening again?

Hmmm, I just looked at www.squared.com. Their website has a link to information on counterfeit breakers in the middle on the left hand side, that takes you to http://www.squared.com/us/squared/corporate_info.nsf/unid/7A9875AC2EF40B9D852572FE004E5FD7/$file/Counterfeit_CB_Frameset.htm

I stand corrected Jim. It was late last night when I looked at Square D's page and somehow my eyes skated right over that picture of the exploding enclosure. But now, having followed that link and read their press releases and looked at the examples page I feel my temperature rising even more.

I had thought I was a reasonably well informed person but now I find that I've been living a life of blissful ignorance. The 64,000 fakes that Connecticut put out there is nothing. There must be HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of these things! It's not just China, now we have breakers from Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan! And the Press Releases page lists nine other distributers that they've gone after! But no mention of any criminal prosecutions. Just "injunctions" and "settlements" and boilerplate about how committed Schneider is to maintaining their brand's integrity.

Glory oskey what what will I find when I Google "counterfeit" with Cutler Hammer, or GE, or Cooper Bussman?

Maybe when one of the geniuses that pushed all this "free-trade" stuff through loses his mega-mansion to a fire traced back to one of these things we'll see a return to a a less greed fueled economy. In the meantime when I buy something the brand name is secondary to source, and I'll be lying awake nights wondering about all the devices I've installed over the past few years.

P.S. Why are talking about this in the UL forum? Shouldn't we be over in Safety?
