From what I've read, real SqD's have the amperage molded into the handle and the fakes have it stamped on in white ink.

Is that accurate? The funny thing is that probably half of the QO's I've seen are of the latter type, and for many years.
you actually have it backwards. Real ones have it painted on in white while the fakes have it stamped. This is according to the link that zog posted.

I saw that. So, it's the other half of the ones that I've seen that are the fakes. :D

The pic shows that pre-2003 breakers don't have the painted numbers.

Does that mean they looked like the new fakes?

Yes.

Older QO breakers had molded numbers. QO breakers have had so many appearance changes over the years I don't think any single identifier would indicate a counterfeit breaker

I think the arc chute oddity on these counterfeits pretty much gives them away.
I agree that if you have an un-installed breaker its authenticity can be determined. My point was for installed breakers and simple "look-overs".

Whenever I see a Federal Pacific box full of breakers, I just condemn then entire box, my salesmanship kicks in and I usually get the Job to replace them. I would trust a counterfeit Federal Pacific breaker before I would a Federal Pacific ! I've had times in my life when the only thing available was a counterfeit Federal.

I turned off a 15 amp GE mini (Tandem) breaker the other day to revamp a few wires and when I turned it back on , I had no power output ! I had to take the little bugger out and snap it back in ! The Only breaker I like is Square-D

And you have proff that the residential CBs are defective, not the panels but the CBs?

Not that I blame anyone for trying to upsell just based on age of the equipment alone, but IMO one should sell on the basis of truth not just hype.
