If you are slow. Start looking at public bid commercial projects. Things like small school add ons, small parking lots, A/C ungrades, etc. You need to have the knowledge and experience for these type projects. If you can somehow become qualified in a manner like starting with a small project say $10,000 to $20,000. Learn how to bid these projects. Get low bid !!!.......Without it you really have no chance, with it you still may not get it because of peddlers but at least your name is out there.
If you have a little bit of knowledge you can talk your way into the project. Then you have a base project that flows money and keeps things rolling. You have to plan these things, you have to have a small amount of seed money to work on, you have to either one some equipment or rent some. If you impress some contractors then you move up the ladder.
This is how I got my start. I basically had no life for 3 years, all I did was work 16 hours a day. I made a few mistakes by working too cheap. Now we bid a few public jobs but mostly private and we negoiate alot of projects. Being in this forum can help a ton. People like 77401 on here are a tremendous help to people. Where was he when I was working for free !! ???
My hats off to a lot of members here who want to just help people better the electrical industry. This is what it needs.
