Based on appearance of how short it is relative to its width, I'm going with it being a male adapter and a lock ring inside.
A female adapter would be as long as a coupling, and probably have ribs on the threaded end.

But you can also use a coupling with a terminal adapter on the inside. It gives you a flush smooth entry.

As electrofan says, it is a box adapter and I just found something out the hard way. The metal of a box is too thin for a box adapter to seat all the way down on a coupling, so the termination is loose by about 3/16" Sucks, and it happened at my own house!:slaphead:

Ok..so obviously a few different ways to terminate pvc to a metal/steel box.
