Found this on Craigs list.

Electrician looking for side work INEXPENSIVE/BEST QUALITY------

Why hire an expensive electrical company to do your electrical work. Those companies are only out to make money. Referrals mean nothing to them. I am a full time licensed electrician looking for some side work since work is slowing down.

I pride myself in my quality and speed. I can promise, you won't find anyone better out there. I stand behind my work, and I will do anything to make you the customer happy. In hopes of becoming your electrician, and also getting your referrals.

Email me with ANY, and I do mean ANY electrical projects you have. Whether it be Low voltage (speakers, phone, cable) or all residential high voltage projects (anything inside and outside of your home).

FREE ESTIMATES, even if you don't use my services. Hope to hear from you soon. Email me anytime. Because of solicitation calls I have stopped listing my phone number online. Email me and I will send it to you, sorry for the inconvenience

wow this guy has got business all figured out.

Those companies are only out to make money

unlike this guy, who's out to work as cheap as possible. and once he realizes he's not making any money off your job, good luck on getting him out to finish.

Craigs list

I would give the guy a break, we are going through one of the toughest times in recorded history and the guy is just trying to make a buck, maybe He is a good Electrician, i don't know, but at least He is making an effort. I live in Akron, Ohio and this city is starting to look like a ghosttown! I'm very gifted to be wiring an apartment complex out in Kent, Ohio but that job will only last for another 2 months..I don't know what I'm going to do after that..all the contractors that I do sidework for do not want to spend any money right now because of the economy and Its getting really scary, I have been in this trade for 15 years and have NEVER,EVER seen it this bad.

You can always work cheap if you don't have insurance, permits, workers comp., taxes, vehicle expenses, rent, any of the traditional overhead.

Yep, got that $2M, and lots of those, oh, and that one too for 8 guys, and those evil taxes, and 2 of those vehicles, and an office too...

No wonder he's beating my price... of course it's because I want to make money... SO I CAN PAY ALL MY BILLS! And hopefully make a few bucks on top of all those things.

You would not believe the ads on Craig?s list.

I do not mind if some one can work / do job cheaper then myself or then myself as long as they have insurance a contractor?s license and not cutting corners.
I have run across several listings on Craig?s list for Guys I do not think are licensed contractors but are only a Journeyman.
This hurts all of us.

I am scrambling trying to find work. I had 2 small contractors that did all of there work and was very busy last year with my contractors, now thay have no work, and 1 went out of business.

Things are a littler scary. I have heard a couple of the big shops are slowing down.

I don't have an ad on craigslist to advertise my sidework, but I am a true believer in it. Along with my full-time job, I have to supplement my income with sidework. I hope I did not translate the above quote wrong. It could be read 2 ways..

1) The guys advertising on craigslist SHOULD be licensed contractors.
2) Journeymen should'nt do sidework. When they do, it hurts all of us.

I think other j.men might have found this quote to be below the belt.
Please explain. I have a family to feed just like you and this guy who posted the ad. There are j.men out who can do work as good as a master. I am 1 of 2 local electricians in my small town, the other guy has been in this town FOREVER and I moved here 7-8 years ago. I have been called to fix MANY of the jobs he did. I feel like my workmanship is on a higher level to his. I started in the trade with a company that seriously stressed quality. It was the way I was taught and when I see some of the corners he's cut, I say to myself, "HE's a master?!?!"
I would put my skills against his any day.
Thanks for your time.

anyone advertising electrical work on craigslist is not my competition, and anyone who would be shopping craigslist for an electrician isnt someone who I really want to work for anyway, as far as Im concerned, they can all have each other....

Awesome, so well put.

Sunday I forewarded 2 or 3 unlicensed electrician sidework, and one handyman that does plumbing, electric, drywall and carpentry, to the local chief inspector.

I have done the same thing
I have turned in 2 handymen that were advertising electrical work and were not licensed. They were sent a letter form the state electrical board ordering them to stop practicing electrical

"i got a family to feed"....what a crock....we all have families to feed....you just choose to do it illegally and hurt my family and my employees families in the process...

so, justify it however you want....but until you do it the right way, no sympathy and no respect....

A agree we all have our family to feed and are in business to make money so we can pay our bills live in a nice but not high end house have health insurance.

This just hurts all of us when the side jobbers or handy man are doing electrical work and charging way below what we charge.

The Denver area market has become very competitive in pricing. Each person is under bidding the other or the customers are price shopping until he/he finds some one to do the job cheap. All I hear when I go out to meet the customer is it is the price that will determine who gets the job.
I have excellent references and all my customers are very happy with my work but to get the job I have to be the lowest price.
I have tried charging a $15.00 estimate fee for which is credited back if I am hired and when I tell customers this they say no thank you and I will call XYZ who said they do not charge for estimates.
Denver is to heavy and not enough work for every one hence fourth the cheap prices and under cutting.

I see people advertising they will beat any written estimate by 10% this is no way to do business
